Conditions

ALS / Motor Neuron Disease (MND)

A progressive condition affecting the nerve cells that control the muscles.

About this condition

Motor neuron disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive condition that affects the nerve cells (motor neurons) controlling the muscles. Over time, it causes increasing weakness.

There is currently no cure, but assessment, symptom management, therapy and support can help maintain comfort, independence and quality of life.

Common symptoms

  • Weakness in a hand, arm or leg
  • Muscle wasting or twitching
  • Muscle cramps
  • Slurred speech or difficulty swallowing
  • Weakness that gradually gets worse

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

How it is assessed

  1. A detailed history and examination.
  2. EMG and nerve conduction studies.
  3. Other tests to rule out conditions with similar symptoms.

Who may be affected

  • Adults with progressive weakness and muscle wasting
  • People with a diagnosis of MND and their families

Preparing for your appointment

It helps to bring:

  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

How the clinic can help

  • Explaining the findings sensitively and clearly.
  • Managing symptoms and planning support.
  • Rehabilitation and care planning with the family.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.
