Overview

Back and neck pain are common. When a nerve in the spine is irritated or compressed, pain can spread into an arm or leg, sometimes with numbness, tingling or weakness.

The spine and pain clinic assesses the cause of your pain and plans treatment, which may include medicines, physiotherapy and, where needed, a discussion of other options.

When to consider this clinic

  • Pain spreading from the lower back into the buttock or leg (sciatica)
  • Neck pain spreading into the shoulder, arm or hand
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or leg
  • Burning, shooting or electric-shock-like nerve pain
  • Back or neck pain that does not improve with rest and simple painkillers
  • Stiffness of the neck or back that affects daily activities

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

What happens at your visit

  1. Questions about where the pain is, how it started and what makes it better or worse.
  2. An examination of your spine, posture, movement, strength, reflexes and sensation.
  3. A review of previous X-ray, MRI or CT reports.
  4. A discussion of whether further imaging or tests are needed.

Who may benefit

  • People with back or neck pain that spreads to an arm or leg
  • People with numbness or weakness linked to a spine problem
  • People with long-standing nerve pain

Frequently asked questions

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg. It is usually caused by irritation of a nerve root in the lower spine.

Will I need surgery for back pain?

Most people with back pain or sciatica improve without surgery. Surgery is considered only in specific situations, after careful assessment.

Should I rest completely?

Long periods of bed rest are usually not recommended. Staying gently active within your comfort limits often helps recovery. Follow the advice given for your situation.
