About this condition

Migraine is a common neurological condition that causes repeated attacks of headache, often on one side of the head and throbbing in nature. Attacks can last from a few hours to a few days.

Some people have an aura before the headache, such as flashing lights or zigzag lines in their vision. Migraine is not dangerous in most cases, but it can have a big effect on daily life.

Common symptoms

  • A throbbing or pulsing headache, often on one side
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light, sound or smells
  • Visual disturbances (aura) before the headache
  • A headache that gets worse with routine physical activity

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

How it is assessed

  1. A detailed history of the headache pattern and possible triggers.
  2. An examination to look for any other causes.
  3. Tests only if the doctor feels they are needed.

Who may be affected

  • People with recurring headaches that affect daily life
  • People whose usual headache pattern has changed

Preparing for your appointment

It helps to bring:

  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

How the clinic can help

  • Identifying and managing triggers.
  • Treatment for attacks.
  • Preventive treatment for frequent migraines, if needed.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.
