Rehabilitation

Neuromuscular Rehabilitation

Therapy to maintain strength, mobility and function in nerve and muscle conditions.

Overview

Nerve and muscle conditions, such as neuropathy, myopathy and Guillain-Barré syndrome, can cause weakness, numbness, tiredness and balance problems.

Neuromuscular rehabilitation aims to maintain and improve strength and mobility, protect joints, manage fatigue and support independence, with exercise matched to the condition.

When rehabilitation may help

  • Weakness in the arms or legs
  • Balance problems caused by numbness in the feet
  • Tiredness that limits daily activities
  • Recovery after an episode of Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Needing advice on walking aids or splints

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

What sessions involve

  1. An assessment of strength, sensation, balance and stamina.
  2. A tailored exercise programme that avoids overworking weak muscles.
  3. Advice on saving energy and staying safe.

Who may benefit

  • People with neuropathy, myopathy or other neuromuscular conditions
  • People recovering from Guillain-Barré syndrome

How to prepare

It helps to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing and footwear
  • Any splints, braces or walking aids you use
  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

What happens next

  • Your programme is reviewed and adjusted as your strength and needs change.
  • Home exercises may be provided to continue between sessions.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.
