Overview

Neuromuscular conditions affect the nerves that run to the arms and legs (peripheral nerves), the junction where nerves meet muscles, or the muscles themselves.

The neuromuscular clinic aims to find the cause of symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness or muscle pain, and to plan treatment and therapy.

When to consider this clinic

  • Numbness, tingling, burning or pins and needles in the hands or feet
  • Weakness in the arms or legs
  • Muscle cramps, twitching or wasting
  • Drooping eyelids or double vision that gets worse when tired
  • Difficulty climbing stairs, getting up from a chair or lifting the arms

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

What happens at your visit

  1. Questions about your symptoms, how they began and your general health, including conditions such as diabetes.
  2. An examination of muscle strength, reflexes and sensation.
  3. A discussion of tests that may help, such as nerve conduction studies (NCV/NCS), EMG and blood tests.

Who may benefit

  • People with numbness, tingling or nerve pain in the hands or feet
  • People with diabetes who have symptoms in their feet
  • People with muscle weakness, wasting or cramps
  • People with a known nerve or muscle condition who need follow-up

How to prepare

It helps to bring:

  • Recent blood test reports, including blood sugar, if available
  • Any previous nerve conduction or EMG reports
  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

What happens next

  • The doctor will explain the likely cause of your symptoms, or which tests are needed to find it.
  • Treatment of an underlying cause, such as diabetes or a vitamin deficiency, may be advised.
  • Medicines for nerve pain and rehabilitation for weakness or balance problems may be discussed.
  • Follow-up visits help to monitor progress.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between neuropathy and myopathy?

Neuropathy affects the nerves and often causes numbness, tingling or weakness. Myopathy affects the muscles themselves and usually causes weakness, often around the hips and shoulders.

Which tests are used for nerve and muscle problems?

Nerve conduction studies (NCV/NCS) and EMG are commonly used, along with blood tests. The doctor will advise which tests, if any, are needed.

Can diabetes cause nerve damage?

Yes. Long-term high blood sugar is one of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy, especially in the feet.
