About this condition

Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg, sometimes into the foot. It happens when a nerve root in the lower spine is irritated or compressed, often by a slipped (herniated) disc.

Most cases improve with time and non-surgical treatment, but persistent or severe symptoms need assessment.

Common symptoms

  • Pain from the buttock down the back of the leg
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the leg
  • Pain that gets worse with sitting, coughing or bending

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

How it is assessed

  1. A history and examination of the spine and legs.
  2. A review of any previous scans.
  3. An MRI scan if the doctor advises it.

Who may be affected

  • People with leg pain that is not improving
  • People with numbness or weakness in the leg

Preparing for your appointment

It helps to bring:

  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

How the clinic can help

  • Pain relief and advice on activity.
  • Physiotherapy and exercises.
  • Further treatment options if symptoms are persistent or severe.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.

Frequently asked questions

Does sciatica need surgery?

Most people improve without surgery. Surgery may be considered when symptoms are severe or persistent, or cause significant weakness.

Should I stay in bed?

Long periods of bed rest are usually not helpful. Gentle activity within your comfort limits is generally encouraged.
