Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

A condition in which the immune system affects the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

About this condition

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long-term condition in which the immune system damages the protective covering (myelin) around nerves in the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. This disrupts nerve signals.

Symptoms vary widely and often come and go in episodes called relapses. Early assessment helps with diagnosis and planning care.

Common symptoms

  • Blurred vision or pain when moving the eye
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Weakness in the arms or legs
  • Problems with balance and coordination
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Bladder problems

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

How it is assessed

  1. A detailed history and neurological examination.
  2. MRI of the brain and spine, where advised.
  3. Other tests as recommended by the doctor.

Who may be affected

  • Young and middle-aged adults with episodes of neurological symptoms
  • People with a diagnosis of MS who need regular review

Preparing for your appointment

It helps to bring:

  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

How the clinic can help

  • Explaining the test results and diagnosis.
  • Treatment of relapses and discussion of long-term treatment options, where appropriate.
  • Rehabilitation for symptoms that affect daily life.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.
