Rehabilitation

Stroke Rehabilitation

Therapy and guidance to help recovery of movement, function and independence after a stroke.

Overview

After a stroke, many people have difficulties with movement, balance, speech, thinking or daily activities. Recovery is often greatest in the weeks and months after a stroke, but improvement can continue for longer.

Stroke rehabilitation uses targeted exercises and practical training to help people regain abilities, adapt to changes and reduce the risk of complications such as stiffness and falls.

When rehabilitation may help

  • Weakness or stiffness of an arm or leg after a stroke
  • Difficulty walking, standing or keeping your balance
  • Problems using your hand for daily tasks
  • Reduced confidence or fear of falling
  • Caregivers needing guidance on how to give safe support at home

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

What sessions involve

  1. An assessment of movement, strength, balance and daily activities.
  2. Setting practical goals with you and your family.
  3. Exercises and activity training adapted to your needs.
  4. A home exercise plan and regular review of progress.

Who may benefit

  • People recovering from a recent stroke
  • People with longer-standing difficulties after a stroke who want to improve function
  • Families and caregivers supporting stroke recovery

How to prepare

It helps to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing and supportive footwear
  • Any walking aids, splints or braces you use
  • Your hospital discharge summary and any previous therapy notes
  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

What happens next

  • Your plan is adjusted as you progress.
  • You may be given exercises to continue at home between sessions.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.
