Overview

Dizziness can mean feeling light-headed, unsteady or as if the room is spinning (vertigo). It can come from the inner ear, the brain, changes in blood pressure or other causes.

Assessment aims to find out what type of dizziness you have and its likely cause, and to plan treatment and balance exercises where they can help.

When to consider this clinic

  • A spinning sensation (vertigo), especially when moving your head
  • Feeling unsteady or off-balance when walking
  • Light-headedness or feeling faint
  • Repeated falls or near-falls
  • Dizziness with ringing in the ears or changes in hearing
  • Nausea or vomiting with dizziness

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

What happens at your visit

  1. Questions about what the dizziness feels like, how long episodes last and what triggers them.
  2. An examination of eye movements, balance, walking and coordination.
  3. Simple bedside tests for inner-ear causes of vertigo.
  4. A discussion of whether any further tests are needed.

Who may benefit

  • People with repeated episodes of vertigo or dizziness
  • People who feel unsteady or have had falls
  • Older adults whose balance has changed

How to prepare

It helps to bring:

  • Notes on when the dizziness happens, how long it lasts and what seems to trigger it
  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

What happens next

  • The doctor will explain the likely cause of your dizziness.
  • Some types of vertigo can be treated with specific head-positioning movements or exercises.
  • Balance and gait training may be recommended.
  • Your medicines may be reviewed if they could be contributing to dizziness.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.

Frequently asked questions

Is dizziness the same as vertigo?

Not exactly. Vertigo is a false feeling that you or the room is spinning. Dizziness can also mean light-headedness or unsteadiness. Describing the feeling accurately helps with diagnosis.

Can balance exercises help?

For many people, specific balance and eye–head exercises can reduce dizziness and improve stability. The doctor or therapist will advise whether they are suitable for you.
