About this condition

Myopathy means disease of the muscles. It usually causes weakness in the muscles closest to the body, such as those around the hips, thighs and shoulders.

Causes include inflammation, inherited conditions, thyroid and other hormone problems, and some medicines. Assessment helps to find the cause and guide treatment.

Common symptoms

  • Difficulty climbing stairs or getting up from a chair
  • Difficulty lifting the arms above the head
  • Muscle aches, cramps or stiffness
  • Tiredness
  • Muscle wasting

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

How it is assessed

  1. A history and an examination of muscle strength.
  2. Blood tests, such as muscle enzyme levels.
  3. EMG and other tests, where advised.

Who may be affected

  • People with gradually increasing muscle weakness
  • People with muscle symptoms after starting a new medicine

Preparing for your appointment

It helps to bring:

  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

How the clinic can help

  • Treatment of the underlying cause where possible.
  • Physiotherapy to maintain strength and mobility.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.
