Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy

Exercise-based treatment to improve movement, strength, balance and pain.

Overview

Physiotherapy uses exercise, movement training and other physical techniques to help people move better, reduce pain and recover function.

For neurological conditions, physiotherapy often focuses on strength, balance, walking, posture and preventing stiffness.

When rehabilitation may help

  • Weakness or stiffness after a stroke or another neurological condition
  • Back or neck pain, including pain with sciatica
  • Balance problems or a risk of falls
  • Reduced mobility or difficulty walking

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

What sessions involve

  1. An assessment of movement, strength and pain.
  2. A personalised treatment plan with clear goals.
  3. Guided exercises during sessions.
  4. Exercises to continue at home.

Who may benefit

  • People recovering from neurological illness
  • People with back, neck or nerve pain
  • People with balance or walking difficulties

How to prepare

It helps to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing and footwear
  • Previous reports or a note from your doctor, if available
  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

What happens next

  • Your progress is reviewed regularly and the plan updated.
  • You will be shown exercises to continue at home.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.
