Cervical & Lumbar Spondylosis

Age-related changes in the neck or lower spine that may cause pain or nerve symptoms.

About this condition

Cervical and lumbar spondylosis describe age-related changes in the discs and joints of the neck and lower back. These changes are common and do not always cause symptoms.

When symptoms occur, they can include pain, stiffness or nerve-related changes in the arms or legs. Assessment depends on symptoms and clinical findings.

Common symptoms

  • Neck or lower-back pain and stiffness
  • Pain spreading to a shoulder, arm, buttock or leg
  • Numbness or tingling in an arm, hand, leg or foot
  • Weakness or changes in coordination

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

How it is assessed

  1. A history and examination of the neck, arms and walking.
  2. A review of X-ray or MRI reports.
  3. An MRI scan if nerve or spinal cord involvement is suspected.

Who may be affected

  • Middle-aged and older adults with neck pain
  • People with arm symptoms or hand clumsiness

Preparing for your appointment

It helps to bring:

  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

How the clinic can help

  • Pain relief, posture and activity advice.
  • Physiotherapy and neck exercises.
  • Further treatment if there is significant pressure on the nerves or spinal cord.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.
