Neuropsychological Assessment

A detailed assessment of thinking, memory, behaviour and emotional wellbeing.

Overview

A neuropsychological assessment is a more detailed evaluation than a routine cognitive screening. It uses standardised tests to look closely at memory, attention, language, reasoning, behaviour and mood.

The results help to understand how a neurological condition is affecting a person, and to plan treatment, rehabilitation and support.

Please confirm with the clinic when you book whether this assessment is currently available.

Why this test may be advised

  • Mild or unclear memory and thinking problems that need detailed evaluation
  • Changes in behaviour or personality
  • Thinking difficulties after a stroke, brain injury or other neurological illness
  • Planning rehabilitation or support at home or at work

Having one or more of these does not by itself mean you have a particular condition. A doctor's assessment is needed to find the cause.

What the test involves

  1. A discussion of your concerns and background.
  2. A series of standardised tests involving questions, puzzles and tasks.
  3. Questionnaires about mood and daily functioning.
  4. The assessment usually takes longer than a routine consultation and may include breaks.

Who may need this test

  • People whose doctor has advised a detailed assessment of thinking or behaviour
  • People recovering from a stroke or brain injury who have thinking difficulties

How to prepare

It helps to bring:

  • Bring reading glasses and hearing aids if you use them
  • Bring details of your education and work history, as these help to interpret the results
  • Ask the clinic when you book how long the assessment is expected to take
  • Previous medical reports, prescriptions and hospital discharge summaries
  • MRI or CT scan films and reports, if you have them
  • A list of all the medicines you take, with their doses
  • A short note of your symptoms: when they started, how often they happen and what makes them better or worse

What happens next

  • A report describing strengths and difficulties is prepared.
  • Recommendations may include treatment, cognitive rehabilitation or practical strategies.

Recommendations depend on the clinician's assessment of your individual situation. This website cannot diagnose your condition or guarantee a particular result.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a cognitive assessment?

A cognitive assessment is usually a shorter screening test. A neuropsychological assessment is more detailed and looks at many areas of thinking and behaviour.

Should a family member come?

It often helps, as they can describe changes in daily life and behaviour.
